Hello loves, it’s Lori here! This book is one of my favorite Feminist reads of this year. It made me learn SO much about important and empowering women throughout History that left a mark on this world and paved a way for everyone in their own unique way.

Let me just tell you now….it’s worth the read I promise! Enjoy☺️

Synopsis

Bygone Badass Broads features 52 remarkable and forgotten trailblazing women from all over the world. With tales of heroism and cunning, in-depth bios and witty storytelling, Bygone Badass Broads gives new life to these historic female pioneers.

Starting in the fifth century BC and continuing to the present, the book takes a closer look at bold and inspiring women who dared to step outside the traditional gender roles of their time. Coupled with riveting illustrations and Lee’s humorous and conversational storytelling style, this book is an outright celebration of the badass women who paved the way for the rest of us.

*I shortened the stories of each women. You just NEED to read this book*

The women that stood out the most to me were…

1. Agnodice, the first female gynecologist in Ancient Greece. She studied in Alexandria, Egypt, where women could study medicine, then cut her hair and moved back to Greece disguised as a man, determined to help women during childbirth. After being the most requested gynecologist by pregnant women, other male doctors got suspicious. Later, her true gender was discovered and she was trialed to be killed for her crime of deception. During her trial, all her past patients came into the court in support of her. (FYI, this story made me sob).

2. Margaret Cavendish, the first recorded female writer to publish under her name, despite her suffering from ridicule. Her novel was the first Sci-fi novel ever to be written and published.

3. SARAH BREEDLOVE, the first Black woman to become a billionaire because of her effective hair products made specifically for Black women in the nineteenth century. Products ranging from Shampoo, powders, and hair growth formulas— her daughter helped expand her products outside of the United States to Costa Rica, Panama, Jamaica, Cuba and Haiti.

4. DOROTHY AZNER, the only female director during the 1930’s and was apart of the Directors Guild Of America with creating strong female characters. She was also the first to create the idea of the boom mic, and helped stars rise such as Lucy Ball, Joan Crawford, Katharine Hepburn and Rosalind Russel.

My Thoughts

This novel has such beautiful illustrations that you can identify each woman’s role within their portrait. Just by looking at each illustration you can assume their kickass role— ranging from scientific discovery, piracy, an artist, business owner to being a ruler.

Each woman’s achievements have touched my heart and soul. I honestly shed a tear at a few stories, laughed at their wit, and rooted for each women as they helped change history.

Mackenzie illustrates every women’s life changing stories with complete and utter wit. Although, it’s written informally, this novel educates and empowers when you’ve finished reading each story.

If you read this novel, you’ll notice that Lee narrates in modern slang that’s honest and moving even with so little factual proof for some of the women mentioned. Female empowerment at it’s finest that I couldn’t help but enjoy every moment of it. When concluding some of the badass woman stories that had little or no proof of their existence/achievements— Lee implied that it’s the reader’s own interpretation, which I enjoyed. Facts vs. Folktale.

My rating is…. 4.8/5 Stars ★★★★★
